Shot in the Arabian desert with a haunting backdrop of the Burj Khalifa, Universal Machine is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a gifted young girl must find a way to understand and overcome a violent encounter with a life-like android New York-based director and artist Daniel Askill enlisted a host of international creative talent for this project. Renowned American minimalist composer Philip Glass scores an ominous orchestral piece undercut by a stirring mezzo-soprano. Belgian choreographer and Beyonce’s 2017 Grammy performance director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui planned the elaborate fight sequences, while the android was CGI mapped to Japanese dancer Tzuki Kozuki. The star of the film, Evnika Sadvakassova, is a boxer who gained the Guiness World Record for the most full contact punch strikes by a female in one minute. If the cameras freeze, they will stop working. It’s been a while since I released a film, or at least one I created purely for the sake of creating. Life can be often too distracting. Nothing brings you back to the present more so than some ice cold water and a little frost bite. The goal of this short piece was to explain the simplicity of a breath hold and the deeper thoughts in the mind when pushing your body to such limits. After all these years, I had this bad feeling that I was expecting too much, that only disappointment awaited me. The same feeling you get before a New Year's party full of false resolutions. So, it was with a heart full of passion and fear that I began this trip into the depths of Russia. Located in the far east of Russia, Kamchatka is a huge volcanic peninsula covering 270,000 km². It was classified as an "ultra-secret" military zone at the end of the Second World War; the peninsula was therefore closed to visitors until the 90s. This has preserved the authenticity of the place and nature there has remained almost intact. Special permits are needed to venture from the capital and there is little to no infrastructure to get around. SYNOPSIS Michael Chicago is the son of a Filipino immigrant mother and an alcoholic father. As a teenager, when his parents argued, he would find refuge in the garage, where he put on his headphones and practiced 'turf' dancing, a style of hip-hop dance unique to the Bay Area. " - One day, in May of 2018 as I was driving through Niagara Falls, NY, I passed a home unlike anything I had ever seen before. I slammed on the brakes and reversed to take some pictures of this stunning and unusual work of art tucked away in an otherwise unremarkable neighborhood. As I finished, a man who was sitting across the street called me over to talk. His name was Isaiah and the conversation that began on that day culminated in this short film. Maybe our encounter was meant to be.
